Bloomington Thunder News Release
Bloomington, IL - In arguably the most heart stopping moment for the Bloomington Thunder in the 2014-15 season, Shane Bednard (Bowling Green State University) was the hero in a 4-3 win over the Muskegon Lumberjacks. The Thunder forward scored his 14th of the year with only 2.7 seconds left on the clock to help the team to a 23-22-7 record. Muskegon moves into a tie for third in the Eastern Conference with a 29-18-4 record, while the Thunder are tied for fifth place with 53 points.
An even keeled first period was a precursor to a back and forth game. Starting the scoring on the power play was Trevor Hamilton (Penn State University) with former Thunder Captain Ryan Siroky (Miami University) winning the faceoff. He grabbed an assist on the play at 13:05 to take the 1-0 lead. Mitch Slattery (St. Cloud State University) scored his first with the Thunder just over two minutes later, tipping the puck into the net. Muskegon regained the lead less than a minute later when Mark Petaccio put a breakaway shot through Thunder goaltender Logan Halladay (University of Minnesota).
The second period had the same scoring drought through ten minutes, but was turned on by Max Gottlieb (Brown University) immediately following the Thunder's third power play chance. A back door feed from Ryan Galt (University of Nebraska-Omaha) was hammered in by the Thunder defenseman to break the tie.
Petaccio would get another chance on a breakaway, but was pulled down to force a penalty shot at 18:25 of the second. Halladay would get his revenge, stopping the Sicklerville, NJ native on the blocker side. Halladay kept the game at a 3-2 lead for Bloomington headed into the final period.
In the third, Petaccio answered right back at 7:50. His 19th of the season tied the game when a low angle shot hit a Thunder defender and snuck to the back of the net. Bednard's late heroics were helped by former 'Jack Matt Mendelson (Penn State University) who picked up two assists, one coming on the final goal.
Halladay finished the game with 28 saves and his ninth win of the season. On the other end of the rink, Michael Latorella (Ohio State University) made 38 saves on the Thunder's 42 shots on net. The goaltender was handed just his fifth loss of the season in 13 games played.
Bloomington will host Team USA on Saturday March 21st for their second to last home game of the season.
