KEARNEY, NE - Matt Meier, Steven Spinner, and Shane Gersich all scored for a 3-2 lead in the third period. However, the Tri-City Storm stayed in the game all night and put in three goals during the third period for a 5-3 comeback win over the Omaha Lancers on Saturday night inside Viaero Event Center.
The Lancers got on the board first to take just 6:15 into the game. Steven Spinner came across the ice to lay a check on Storm defenseman Jalen Schulz. Spinner forced a pass by Schulz that was intercepted by Matt Meier at the top of the offensive zone circles. Meier took the puck and let a high shot go that beat Alec Dillon over his shoulder for a 1-0 lead, unassisted.
Late in the opening period Tri-City responded to tie the game up at a goal aside. Garrett Gamez sent a pass out to Nick Master who was waiting at the top of the offensive zone circle. Master immediately let a shot go that hit the inside bar, top shelf to pull even with the Lancers 1-1 at 15:10 of the first period. Assists on the Master goal were assisted by Gamez and Christopher Brown.
A rebound goal by Steven Spinner got Omaha their second lead of the night in the second period. Ryan Donato took the puck from the right wing circle and sent a low shot on the net that was stopped with the right leg pad of Alec Dillon. The rebound went straight to Steven Spinner and he snapped in his 18th of the year for a 2-1 lead to Omaha at 7:30 of the second period.
Once again the Storm came back to even the score. Garrett Gamez sent a puck from the right side of the ice that went off a body in front and slid by Driscoll on his right side to tie the game up 2-2 with 6:23 left in the middle period. Assists on the Pedrie goal were given to Gamez on the centering attempt and Nick Master as well.
Special teams came through at the end of the period for the Lancers to retake the lead. Steven Spinner took a Louie Rowe pass and set up on the left wing hash mark looking for options. Spinner sent the puck across the slot to an awaiting Shane Gersich who sent a rocket by a diving Alec Dillon for his team-leading 26th of the year for a 3-2 lead with 4:42 left in the second period.
Tri-City caught fire early in the third period. The scoring started on a shot from the left point position by Kevin Kerr that went off the right post and into the net to tie the game for the third time of the night at 3:49 of the third frame. Kerr's goal was assisted by Kyle Eastman and Chase Berger.
Just 54 seconds after the game-tying goal, the Storm took their first lead of the night. Tory Dello took a pass at the right point and let a shot go that found a way through traffic and behind Zach Driscoll to give Tri-City a 4-3 lead with 15:15 left in the game. Assists on the Dello shot were credited to Garrett Gamez and Chris Wilkie.
Wilkie got in on the scoring to seal a two-goal victory for the Storm. He took a pass into the right wing circle and scored his 31st of the year at 1:18 of the third period on assists from Garrett Games and Nick Master for the 5-3 lead.
That lead held up as the final. Zach Driscoll stopped 23 shots on the night.
