Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Urbandale, Iowa- Rob Bordson scored two goals and Kent Patterson made 36 saves as the RoughRiders defeated the Tri-City Storm 5-3 at the Buc Bowl preseason tournament in Des Moines Friday.
After the first period ended with the score tied at one thanks to goals from the Riders' David Boehm (who scored shorthanded) and the Storm's Michael Pilot, the Riders gained the upper hand by outscoring the Storm 3-1 in the second period.
Bordson gave the Riders a 2-1 lead at 2:27 of the second but Andrew Sackrison would respond for Tri-City to even the score again at the 8:53 mark.
The Riders, however, would score a pair of power play goals just 35 seconds apart to take command of the game just past the midway point of the second. Bordson converted a 5-on-3 Rider advantage at 10:50 to put Cedar Rapids in front for good. At 11:25 David Grun scored with Cedar Rapids up one man to make it 4-2.
Jesse Martin's power play goal brought Tri-City back within one at 9:19 of the third period, but the Storm was unable to force an equalizer past Patterson, who made 14 saves in the third.
With just over two minutes remaining, Robin Bergman's insurance goal made it 5-3 and effectively put the game away for the Riders.
