Frisco RoughRiders News Release

The Frisco RoughRiders (38-24) won, 2-1, over the visiting Rockhounds (31-31) Monday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Michael Schlact gave the ‘Riders a quality start and a pair of miscues by Midland in the seventh inning by Midland pushed the RoughRiders past the Rockhounds.

The ‘Riders jumped on Midland starter Vincent Mazzaro for an early run in the first inning. Craig Gentry led off the game with a single and later game around to score on a Steve Murphy ground out. Todd Donovan led off the third inning with a walk, stole second, and scored on an Aaron Cunningham single to tie the game at one run a piece.

The game remained knotted at one as Schlact and Mazzaro locked into a pitcher's duel. Schlact (3-5) allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings of work while striking out three and walking five.

The ‘Riders would break the tie in the seventh inning with the help of the Rockhounds' defense. Thomas Berkery lofted a shallow fly ball into rightfield that dropped for a base hit to lead off the inning. Casey Benjamin laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Berkery, but an errant throw to first allowed Berkery to advance to third and Benjamin to second. With two outs in the inning, Dustin Majewski hit a perfectly placed ball into the hole at shortstop scoring Berkery. Benjamin tried to extend the Frisco lead on the play, but was thrown out at the plate.

Mazarro (7-3) took the loss for Midland surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.

Andrew Laughter earned his fourth save working a pair of scoreless frames to close out the contest.

With the San Antonio loss earlier in the night, The RoughRiders lowered their magic number to clinch the first half title to four.

The series continues Tuesday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark when Trey Hodges (5-4, 3.53) takes the hill for Frisco against Midland's Andrew Bailey (1-5, 6.15) at 7 p.m.
