Tulsa Drillers News Release
June 9, 2008 - When the Northwest Arkansas Naturals began their current series in Tulsa, they were 7-1 against the Drillers. The record now stands at 7-3 as the Drillers defeated the Naturals Monday night for their second straight win. Tulsa pounded out 13 hits and 12 runs in route to a 12-3 victory at Drillers Stadium.
The Naturals took an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Kila Kaaihue in the first inning but the Drillers pounded back with five first inning runs of their own.
After Eric Young Jr. walked, Dexter Fowler, Matt Miller and Jeff Kindel all singled to give the Drillers a 2-1 lead. Daniel Carte's seventh home run of the year followed to push the Drillers lead to 5-1.
Carte has powered the Drillers during their current homestand. He came into Monday's meeting batting .583 in his previous five games during the stand.
The Nats starter, Blake Wood, is the number four ranked prospect in the Kansas City Royals farm system according to Baseball America, but he could not make it through the first inning against the Tulsa bats.
The Drillers continued their offensive explosion in the fourth inning off Naturals' reliever Paul Mildren. Kindel and Carte both had sacrifice flies that scored Young who had previously singled and Fowler who had walked. With Miller on third after recording his third hit, Corey Wimberly on second with a single, and Jeff Nelson on first with a walk, Jeff Dragicevich hit a grand slam to left field. The blast was his ninth of the year. The six- run inning, one short of their season high, gave the Drillers an 11-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Drillers tacked on to their lead thanks to Kindel. His fourth home run of the year over the right field fence extended the Drillers lead to 12-1.
The Naturals added a pair of runs in the seventh but the outcome had long been decided.
Drillers starting pitcher Brandon Hynick moved to 4-4 on the season with the victory. He allowed only two earned runs and six hits in seven innings of work.
The Naturals and the Drillers will play game three of their four-game series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Drillers Stadium. The Drillers hope to clinch a series win on the back of Ching-Lung Lo (4-6). Northwest Arkansas will counter with Rowdy Hardy (2-5). Free tickets for the game are available at area Quick Trips.
NOTE: The Drillers made a roster move before the game, placing catcher Neil Wilson on the disabled list with a broken little finger and adding catcher David Parrish to the roster. Parrish, the son of former Detroit catcher Lance Parrish, was a first round draft pick of the New York Yankees in 2000. He has spent the first part of this season with Long Beach in the Golden Baseball League.
