Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Arkansas Travelers broke the three-way first-place tie in the North Division in a big way on Monday night. One night after blowing two late leads, the Travs hammered the Cardinals by a score of 12-2 at Hammons Field. Coupled with Northwest Arkansas' loss in Tulsa, the Travs are now one game up on Springfield and Northwest Arkansas in the North Division.
An eight-run second inning against Cards' starter Mark McCormick was plenty for Travs' starter Dan Denham, who worked seven innings of one-run baseball on Monday night. Denham allowed a Jon Jay bloop-single to score Tyler Greene in the third, but that would be all. Denham (5-5) allowed just one run on four hits, striking out four while walking just one.
The Travs scored their first of eight on a bobbled ball in right field by Mark Shorey, allowing Brian Stavisky to score, making it 1-0. Nate Sutton highlighted the inning with a grand slam, his fourth home run of the year, giving the Travs a commanding 5-0 lead. Ben Johnson homered three batters later, as Arkansas took a commanding 7-0 lead. They finished the inning with an RBI double from Corey Smith off Cards' reliever Kyle Sadlowski, taking an 8-0 lead. All eight runs were charged to McCormick (0-1), who lasted just five outs into Monday's game, giving up eight earned on only five hits. He walked four and struck out three in his 1 2/3 innings.
Arkansas got their ninth run on a controversial home run in the fifth. Drew Toussaint hit a towering drive down the left field line. The ball was ruled fair, despite a lengthy argument from Springfield Manager "Pop" Warner.
The Travs capped their scoring with three runs in the ninth against Cards' reliever Marco Gonzalez, highlighted by Brian Stavisky's two-run homer, his fourth of the year, making it a 12-1 game.
Springfield got their final run in the ninth against Travs' reliever Doug Brandt. Steven Hill singled with one-out and later scored on an RBI hit from Brandon Yarbrough, finishing out the scoring at 12-2.
Shane Robinson finished the game 0-4, ending his 12-game hit streak.
Springfield (31-31) will send Jess Todd (1-1) to the mound on Tuesday night, as he'll face Arkansas right-hander Anthony Ortega (6-3). Game time on Tuesday is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm.
MATT CLEMENT, VERSION 2
Matt Clement will pitch again on Friday night, as the rehabbing right-hander will take the hill for the second time in the home stand. Come out and watch a big-leaguer work his way back to the major leagues, as the Cards take on the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at 7:10pm. Friday will also feature another Fireworks Spectacular thanks to AM Pyrotechnics. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-0395 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
