Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Viosergy Rosa's ninth-inning, two-run double to the gap in right-center field lifted Midland past Corpus Christi 3-2 Thursday at Whataburger Field before 5,138.

With Hooks starter Evan Grills (3-4) shooting for a complete game after just 75 pitches through eight frames, Matt Chapman drew a walk and Beau Taylor laid down a bunt hit. Midland manager Ryan Christenson then inserted Danny Oh as a pinch-runner at first before Tyler Marioncov flew out to right. The game-winner came on a full-count offering to Rosa.

That made a winner of Lou Trivino (1-0), who worked the eighth in relief of starter Daniel Gossett. Bobby Wahl pitched around two free passes in the ninth to secure his ninth save, concluding a contest that lasted just two hours and four minutes.

Midland (23-11; 56-48) has won seven of 10. Corpus Christi (15-19; 62-42) has dropped four of five.

Aided by three double plays and the favorable pitch count, Grills lasted 8 1/3 innings and 93 pitches, including 66 strikes. He walked one and struck out six; all six of his punch outs came after the fifth. Grills' pitch count by inning was 7-10-7-12-9-10-12-8-18.

Gossett was efficient as well, covering seven innings in 79 pitches (56). He established a career best with nine strikeouts. Gossett yielded a total of three hits in his first two turns on the mound and then retired the final 18 men he faced.

His inning-by-inning pitch count: 12-7-13-10-11-12-14.

Both clubs turned first-inning double plays, but the Hooks generated a run as Derek Fisher's liner into right-center scored Ramon Laureano. Laureano bounced a one-out ground-rule double into the Corpus Christi bullpen.

Corpus Christi doubled its advantage during the second. Nick Tanielu reached on a lead-off infield single and advanced to second when shortstop Yairo Munoz threw wildly to first. Conrad Gregor followed with a productive ground out to the right side, and Tanielu crossed on Alejandro Garcia's bouncer to Munoz.

Matt Chapman's 24th home run halved the Hooks advantage in the sixth.

Friday's pitching matchup features Corpus Christi right-hander Keegan Yuhl (8-3) vs. Midland southpaw Brandon Mann (1-1). The 1976 Hooks' FauxBack Project continues, punctuated by Bud Light Friday Fireworks and the Texas Lottery Lucky Scratch Ticket Dance-Off.
