Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Backed by a brilliant start from Francis Martes, the Hooks blanked San Antonio 3-0 in Wednesday's series finale at Wolff Stadium.
It marked Corpus Christi's 11th shutout victory of the season, and the club's first since June 25 at Frisco.
Martes (6-4) held the Missions to a pair of walks and a single over seven innings. The free passes came in the first and Gabriel Quintana's lead-off knock in the fifth accounted for the hit.
The 20-year-old flame-thrower fanned nine on the night, throwing 58 of 95 pitches for strikes. Martes retired 19 of the final 20 he faced.
Corpus Christi (15-18, 62-41) capitalized on a lack of command by Tim Berry in the second. Roberto Pena's double was supplemented by three walks, including a Ramon Laureano bases-loaded free pass.
Berry (0-2) retired the next five hitters, striking out three. Alejandro Garcia ended the run with a lead-off homer in the fourth.
The San Antonio (17-16, 39-64) southpaw scattered six hits over 7 1/3 innings
The Hooks managed their final marker in the ninth against Rafael De Paula. Chase McDonald opened with a single. Garcia laid down a bunt base hit and Pena coaxed a walk to load the bases. Antonio Nunez, making his Double-A debut, rolled a ground ball to the right side, plating pinch-runner James Ramsay.
Ryan Thompson sidestepped a lead-off double in the eighth. Nick Tanielu made a tremendous diving stop at third for the first out, and Thompson coaxed a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Chris Cotton fanned a pair and worked around a two-out single in the ninth for his second save.
The Hooks head home to Whataburger Field for a seven-game home stand against Midland and San Antonio. Thursday's 7:05 opener features Corpus Christi lefty Evan Grills (3-3, 4.52) against Daniel Gossett (2-4, 2.91). Click here for a full rundown of the upcoming giveaways and promotions.
