Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana - The Roosters outlasted the Mavericks 12-10 on Wednesday night after both teams hit a grand slam. Mid-Missouri got out to and early lead, but Richmond rallied to take control in the later innings for its fourth straight win.
Richmond's starter, Danny Bonilla, ran into trouble immediately by giving up a lot of runs in the first two innings. Six runs scored in the first for the Mavericks, four of them coming on a grand slam by former Rooster, Brian Baker. Another run scored in the second on a one-out hit by Thomari Story-Harden that scored Dusty Hillman to give the Mavericks a 7-0 after only two innings of play.
Tony Sanguinetti, who has been swinging a hot bat of late, continued to pound the ball by getting a grand slam of his own in the third to cut Mid-Missouri's lead down to 7-4. The Mavs added a run in the fourth and fifth, but the Roosters countered with a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Kevin White, scoring Mike Reese and four runs in the sixth. Gerald Miller had a three-run homer and White had an RBI groundout in the inning to tie the game at 9-9.
The Roosters broke the tie in the seventh and added a couple on insurance runs in the eighth thanks to Nate Gravley. A RBI single in the seventh and a two-run single in the ninth from Gravley put the Roosters out on top permanently at 12-9. The Mavericks worked a run across in the bottom of the ninth, but Hunter Davis shut the door to earn the save.
Richmond (28-30) and Mid-Missouri (20-36) will continue the series at Taylor Stadium with a 7:05pm (Indiana time) game on Thursday. Mike Cervera (0-0, 7.94 ERA) will start for Richmond while Pete Eberhardt (0-0, 8.76 ERA) takes the hill for the Mavericks.
