Q&A with Matt Schweitzer
Matt Schweitzer is in his sixth year with the Roosters. He has spent time in the bullpen as well as being a regular starter. Schweitzer was with the team when it won back-to-back Frontier League Championships in 2001 and 2002.
Q: The Roosters held their Youth Pitching Camps on Wednesday and Thursday. You were one of the instructors. What were some things you tried to work on with the kids?
A: Most of the kids were anywhere from six years old to 12 or 13 so we just worked on some basic things. We worked on fielding practice because it doesn't matter where you play, you have to know how to field the ball. I taught them some grips for holding the baseball and the basic stuff they need to know as they grow up, nothing that's going to hurt them.
Q: You've been with Richmond for the better part of six years. What is it about this town that you like?
A: I've been fortunate to stay in one place for so long. They've treated me very well here and the fans have been great. Its been fun to play in front of these fans. There been opportunities to go other places, but when it comes down to it, I'd rather be loyal to the place that has taken care of me for so long.
Q: You were on the two championship teams here in Richmond. What was it like to be a part of those teams?
A: I haven't seen another team in the Frontier League that was put together like those teams were. We had the pitching, the hitting and the bullpen. The second year was better because we got to win it at home. Anytime you win is great but it added a bit more to it to win it in front of the home town fans.
Q: You've been a reliever and a starter, which do you prefer?
A: I just want to be used in the best way to help this team win. I like having the four days off between starts, but I came out of the pen in Kalamazoo and I did kind of miss it. I enjoy going out and playing in tough situations.
Q: What do you do with the time between starts?
A: Recover from old age (laughs). I'm not that old but in baseball years I am. It takes a toll on the body and some time to recover. There is a running program that we do on off days and I do some soft-tossing and stretching. Its just a basic recovery time.
Q: This will be your last year in the Frontier League since you will be over the age limit next season. What are your plans after the Roosters?
A: I take it one year at a time. I love to play the game and I'd love to go back to affiliated ball if I get the opportunity, but if not, it would be hard to play. I'm starting to reach the age where your priority starts to change and you have to move on. I just want to enjoy my last year in the Frontier League and have as good a time as I can.
Q: What are the keys to the Rooster's recent success?
A: Our bullpen is shaping up, and we've always had a good starting core. We weren't struggling in the beginning, we just weren't getting timely hits. Lately, everything has started to come together. We've been patient and I think everything is going to turn around. I think everyone will be surprised with how well we do.
