Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana - Richmond lost a slugfest, 15-11, on Saturday night, snapping its season high four-game winning streak. Both teams scored plenty of runs, but a grand slam from Gateway proved to be the deciding factor in the loss.
The Roosters took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a RBI single by Mike Bidwell to score Nate Gravley. The Grizzlies got that run back in their half of the inning when Phil Warren hit a solo home run over the short wall in right field to tie the game at 1-1.
Richmond and Gateway traded scores again in the third inning. Kevin White and Tony Sanguinetti each had solo home runs for Richmond in the top half. The Grizzlies answered with six runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Ben Margalski and Brandon Averill each had 2 RBI hits to help Gateway to a 7-3 lead after three innings. Phil Warren came to bat in the fourth and doubled to center to score Margalski and Freddy Lopez to extend the lead to 9-3. Richmond then rallied for five straight runs over the next two innings to pull within one at 9-8. Josh Hollingsworth had a hit in both innings to score three of the runs.
Gateway put the game out of reach after the Richmond rally. Warren struck again in the sixth when he doubled to left to get his fourth and fifth RBI of the night and Brandon Averill hit a grand slam with two out in the eighth to push the lead to 15-8. Ty Herriott added a little drama in the ninth with a two out, three-run homer, but the Grizzlies induced a Mike Reese ground ball to the shortstop to end the game. Curt Moenter (1-2) took the loss while Nick Szczur (2-0) earned the win for Gateway.
Richmond (13-16) will try to win the series against Gateway (10-19) on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. (Indiana Time). Jared Howton (1-1, 5.40 ERA) will get the start for the Roosters and faces Chris Little (0-0, 5.09 ERA). The Roosters will return home on Monday for a three games series against Ohio Valley.
