Kansas City Brigade News Release
KANSAS CITY (April 10) - The joke when the Brigade travels is that 5'7" rookie defensive back Isaiah Trufant gets to board the plane first because he looks like a minor. That joke will not be quite as popular now following Trufant's performance in a 65-31 blowout win at the Las Vegas Gladiators last Sunday. At the end of the game, he was the biggest man on the field.
In only his second Arena Football League start, Trufant filled the stat sheet, recording an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, four pass breakups and 4.5 tackles. The all-around stellar effort earned him the ADT Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Trufant helped the Brigade's number two-ranked defense record a team record five turnovers and limit the Gladiators to just 5.1 yards-per-play. Trufant and his secondary teammates-the league's best pass defense-forced Las Vegas quarterback Shaun King into a 48 percent completion rate and two interceptions. On the Gladiators second drive of the game with the Brigade up 7-3, Trufant forced a fumble and recovered it, which the offense turned into a touchdown on the very next play. It started a run of 27 consecutive points for the team.
Trufant, out of Eastern Washington University, began the season on the practice squad and was signed to the active roster prior to Week 5. He started against the Arizona Rattlers at the safety position, using his quickness and on-the-ball skills to record two pass breakups, one in the end zone, and a fumble recovery that stopped a Rattlers drive late in the first half. The Brigade eventually came back from 21 points down to win 62-61 in overtime.
