Rommie Lewis Baffles Barnstormers in Complete Game, Five-Hit Shutout

June 7, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

Rommie Lewis dominated the Barnstormers on Cancer Survivor Night presented by Visiting Angels on Sunday, shutting out Lancaster en route to a complete game victory for the Revolution. It was the best start of the season thus far for Lewis, who is now 4-3 on the year and lowered his ERA to a miniscule 2.13 with the nine scoreless frames.

In front of an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 4,500, Lewis went the distance, throwing only 106 pitches and striking out a total of four Barnstormers hitters, all while scattering a paltry five hits (all singles) throughout the game.

Luis De La Cruz provided all the offense the Revs would need with an RBI single to center in the fourth, scoring Nick Ferdinand.

Ferdinand later got in on the action, sending a homer over the Arch Nemesis in left field to give Lewis a little more room to breathe. Ferdinand has gone yard twice in his first three games with the Revolution, sending both over the tallest wall in pro sports.

It turned out that one run would be plenty, as the Barnstormers could not get anything going against the big lefty from Seattle the entire evening, failing to record an extra base hit.

The Revs tacked on a run in the eighth for good measure on a Ferdinand single, scoring Andres Perez to take the lead up to 3-0 heading into the ninth.

The Revs will look to make it back-to-back victories Monday on Hockey Night at Santander Stadium, as York lefty Logan Williamson (1-3, 2.43) goes up against Barnstormers right-hander Bryan Woodall (1-3, 5.60) at 6:30 p.m.

Notes: The shutout win is the first of the season for the Revs. Lewis threw 73 of his 106 pitches for strikes, notching his first career shutout; his only other complete game occurred in 2003 with Frederick. Lewis walked just one in the game and recorded 13 ground outs. It was the Revs' first complete game since Matt Neil went the distance at Somerset on June 3, 2014. It marked the sixth complete game shutout in Revs history and first since June 8, 2013 when Chris Cody tossed a seven-inning shutout in Camden. It is the Revs' fourth complete game nine-inning shutout and first since Chris Waters one-hit Sugar Land on the road, September 18, 2012. It is the fourth complete game shutout by a Revs pitcher at Santander Stadium and first since Lorenzo Barcelo blanked Camden in seven innings on August 29, 2011. It is the third nine-inning complete game shutout by a Revs pitcher at Santander Stadium and first since Shaun Garceau did it against the Road Warriors on August 20, 2011. Perez doubled to right field with one out in the eighth, breaking the Revs career record for doubles with his 83rd, surpassing former teammate Ramon Castro. Ferdinand (2-for-4) has recorded multi-hit games in each of his first three contests with York, now 8-for-14 at the plate. At two hours and four minutes, it lasted just two minutes longer than the quickest nine-inning game in club history. It marks the quickest nine-inning game in Santander Stadium history. Lancaster has now been shut out in back-to-back games, four of its last six, and five of its last seven on the road, having scored just one run in those seven road games. York now leads this season's War of the Roses series, 6-2, having won each of the last four meetings. The Revs improve to 90-74 all-time vs. the Barnstormers, 48-35 at Santander Stadium. York is now 31-17 vs. Lancaster with a 19-6 mark at home in three seasons under manager Mark Mason. Lewis is now 3-0 in three starts against the Barnstormers this season, having allowed just two runs (one earned) in 19.0 innings. The complete game comes one day after the Revs tied a team record by using eight relievers in an extra-inning contest. Dan Osterbrock (3-2) was solid in defeat for Lancaster, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits over seven innings. York (17-25) jumps half a game in front of Lancaster (17-26) for third place in the Freedom Division.
