Ducks Beat the Blue Crabs in Walk off Fashion

(Waldorf, MD., May 7th 2015)---Though the first four innings were scoreless between Ducks and the Blue Crabs, the second half of the game provided late runs, and excitement as the Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in a walk-off win by the final of 5-4.

For the third straight game, Southern Maryland scored first as the offense pushed across the first run of the ballgame in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Antone DeJesus tripled off the wall in right to score Craig Maddox to make it 1-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Ducks took the lead with two runs scored. Mike Blanke singled, followed by a Dan Lyons double to put runners at second and third. Bryan Sabatella then came to the plate and ripped a single to center to score both baserunners to bring the score to 2-1.

Long Island took the lead, managing to score a run in the sixth, and the eighth. In the bottom of the sixth, Prentice Redmond scored on a sacrifice fly to score Mike Blanke. After two walks and a hit batter in the bottom of the eighth, Orlando Santos walked Sabatella to score Jon Griffin to make it 4-1.

Southern Maryland played comeback in the top of the ninth by scoring three runs. Zach Wilson led things off with a double. Jovan Rosa then singled to right to put runners at the corners. Two batters later, Craig Maddox singled to score a run to make it 4-2. Daryle Ward then pinch hit for Casey Frawley and singled to score Rosa to make it a one run ballgame. Antone DeJesus stepped to the plate, and reached base on the error by the right fielder Sabatella to score Maddox and tie the ballgame at four apiece.

In the bottom of the ninth, Lew Ford led off with a double to left field. That followed with a Jon Griffin intentional walk and a wild pitch to put runners at first and second. Prentice Redmond was then intentionally walked, and with the bases loaded for the Ducks, Reegie Corona stepped up to the plate and lashed a single to center field to score the winning run Lew Ford to pull off the 5-4 victory.

Jovan Rosa made his debut for the Blue Crabs going 2-4 from the cleanup spot in the order. Craig Maddox went 3-4 at the plate as well, as Southern Maryland banged out eight hits on the day. The bottom three hitters of Corona, Blanke, and Lyons went a combined 5-10 for Long Island.

Game two of the series will take place tomorrow evening as the Blue Crabs will send LHP Brian Burres (1-2, 4.43) to the mound while the Ducks starter is still to be determined. The first pitch is set for 6:35 P.M.
