SUGAR LAND, Texas. - The Sugar Land Skeeters picked up a 4-1 victory over Bridgeport on a sun-soaked Sunday afternoon at Constellation Field. The Skeeters manufactured three runs in the bottom of the first and the pitching staff surrendered just one run in the win. Sugar Land improves to 20-23 while Bridgeport falls to 18-23 on the year.

Sugar Land wasted no time in jumping on Bridgeport's starter, D.J. Mitchell. Kevin Russo singled into left-center before Dustin Martin roped an RBI double into the left-center alley, bringing Russo around from first. Jeremy Barfield followed with a long home run into the Wells Fargo Picnic Plaza in left, staking the Skeeters to a 3-0 lead.

Roy Merritt turned in another strong start for the Skeeters. In his second start of the season, Merritt went 4.0 innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out five. The southpaw has not allowed a run in 8.0 innings of work this season.

Derek Blacksher held the Bluefish in check for much of the contest. Bridgeport finally scratched across a run in the top of the seventh after Welington Dotel tripled to the warning track in right. John Alonso lifted a fly ball into center with one out, allowing Dotel to come in to score and cut the Skeeters' lead to 3-1.

The Skeeters got the run back in the bottom of the frame. Chris Wallace blasted a leadoff double off the wall in left and Denny Almonte drew a walk before Patrick Palmeiro poked a single into center, scoring Wallace and inflating the cushion to 4-1 for Sugar Land.

Blacksher went 4.0 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Derrick Loop entered in the top of the ninth and retired the side in order to earn his first save of the year.
