Romero shines in Crusher victory

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy Health, held the Joliet Slammers to just five hits on Thursday evening at Sprenger Stadium, getting seven scoreless innings from Alex Romero as they avoided a sweep with a 3-0 win.
The win for the Crushers (44-43) snapped a five game losing streak at home and a nine game losing streak against Joliet. For the Slammers (49-38) the loss brought an end to their seven game road winning streak.
Alex Romero (10-6) was simply sensational for the Crushers. He has now thrown 31 consecutive scoreless innings, and he never really gave the Slammers a chance on Thursday night. Joliet did not record their first hit until Ridge Hoopi-Haslam belted a one out single in the fifth inning. Romero never faced more than five batters in a single frame.
Lake Erie scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. Aaron Hill launched a solo homer to start the frame. The solo shot to left was his fourth of the season. Zach Racusin then walked, but was thrown out at home plate a few moments later trying to score on Joel McKeithan's double to left. Cody Lenehan followed with a two-run homer to center, his fifth of the season.
The pitching was stellar on both sides after that. Romero was replaced in the eighth inning by Seth Lucio, who faced four batters and worked a scoreless inning, before Logan Lombana worked around a two out double to snag the save in the ninth.
The Slammers had just three base runners in scoring position all night long.
Romero scored the victory for Lake Erie, allowing just three hits and walked a pair while fanning eight batters over seven scoreless innings of work. He has not allowed a run since August 1. Lombana (10) is now tied for the team lead in saves. Andrew Zellner (2-2) took the loss for the Slammers after allowing three runs on four hits over two innings of work.
The Crushers will begin a three game series against the Washington Wild Things in Wahsington, Pa., on Friday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
