CornBelters Drop Series Finale to Freedom

NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, fell 6-5 to the Florence Freedom on Thursday night at the Corn Crib.

The Freedom scored first by converting a lead-off walk in the second inning into a run courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Jacob Wark. Florence added to their lead with a two-run line drive home run to left field by Skyler Ewing for a 3-0 advantage in the third inning.

The CornBelters dented the scoreboard in the third inning on a two-run homer to left by Derrick Loveless to cut the deficit to 3-2, followed by a flare double just inside the right field line by Andrew Godbold to tie the contest at 3-3.

Florence unknotted the tie in the fifth inning with a three-run homer by Taylor Bryant over the left field wall.

The Belters cut the margin to the final score with a two-run, ninth-inning homer by Loveless.

Steve Hagen (7-6) threw six innings for the win, giving up three runs (earned) on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Jacinto Garcia (5-5) took the loss, pitching five innings with six runs (earned) on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Johnathan Tripp pitched the ninth inning for his 14th save.

The CornBelters travel to Southern Illinois for a five-game series with the Miners. The set opens with a single game at 7:05 p.m. at Rent One Park followed by doubleheaders beginning at 4:05 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Belters next play at the Corn Crib on Friday, August 31 at 7:05 p.m. against the Evansville Otters in the final series of the regular season.
