Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - Today, the Central Hockey League (CHL) announced that Romeo Vivit has earned the honor of being named the Gunner Garrett Equipment Manager of the Year. Vivit earned the honor in just his second season as the Equipment Manager/Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Rush. The award is also the second in three years for the Rush. Shawn "Stixy" Smith won the award in Rapid City's inaugural season of 2008-09.
"I'm quite flattered and honored to be named Equipment Manager of the Year," said Vivit. "Here in my second season, I'm still trying to learn and work hard for sake of organization and team. I owe a lot to the other equipment managers who have helped me out tremendously over last two years. To me, it's more important that Osama Kassab and I won as a team in the CHL's "Best of the Best" poll. I owe Sam a lot in terms of helping me, especially when I first started. I'd really thank coaches Ferras and DeSantis, General Manager Tim Hill, as well as the ownership for the opportunity. Finally, those that have helped me out on volunteer basis, and the entire Rapid City community, I couldn't have done it without them."
Vivit got his start with the Rush in 2008-09 under the tutelage of Smith, serving as the volunteer Equipment Manager during Rapid City's inaugural season. He then replaced Smith after the 2009 CHL Gunner Garret Equipment Manager of the Year winner moved up to the American Hockey League with Abbotsford.
The Park Ridge, Illinois native's passion for playing the game lives on as the Hockey Director for the City of Rapid City and as a volunteer coach, skills developer and consultant for the Rushmore Thunder Youth Hockey Association.
The National American University (Rapid City, SD) graduate won convincingly earning 30 points in the voting process. Finishing in second place was Wichita's Brad Brungardt with 21 points.
Athletic trainers and equipment managers were asked to rank the top workers in each category, one to three. A first place vote earned five points, a second place vote earned three points and a third place vote earned one point.
The CHL All-Rookie Team will be announced on Friday, March 18 with the remaining CHL Awards announced throughout the next 10 days. The CHL Most Valuable Player recipient will be announced Monday, March 28.
