March 17, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
TEMPE, AZ - The Central Hockey League today announced George Bullock, Jr. of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs as the winner of the league's 2011 Athletic Trainer of the Year award. The honor is the first of Bullock's 16-year pro hockey career and comes in his ninth season as a member of the Mudbugs.
The award was voted on by all CHL Athletic trainers, who were asked to rank the top workers in each category, one to three. A first place vote earned five points, a second place vote earned three points and a third place vote earned one point. Bullock finished with 24 points during the voting period to win the award.
Bullock has been keeping Mudbugs players healthy and tending to their medical needs since the 2002-2003 season, making him the third-most tenured member of the organization (behind only Head Coach Scott Muscutt and Equipment Manager Billy T. Welker). Over those nine seasons, Bullock has helped the ¬ËBugs to eight playoff appearances and two trips to the Ray Miron President's Cup Finals.
A 16-year veteran in pro hockey, Bullock worked his milestone 1,000th career game on January 2 of this year. His start in the game dates back to 1994, when he broke in under the guidance of Ralph Calvanese with the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League. From there, he went on to work in the ECHL in Louisville, Kentucky and Greensboro, North Carolina and also spent five seasons with the CHL's Wichita Thunder.
A native of upstate New York and graduate of Guilford College in Greensboro, Bullock has also worked in pro roller hockey, minor-league baseball, arena football and various high school and college level athletics during his career as a Certified Athletic Trainer.
The Mudbugs are currently in Fort Wayne, Indiana preparing for another matchup with the Komets Friday night at 7:00 Cental Time. Radio coverage of the game can be heard on News Radio 710 AM KEEL and the game will also be shown live online on CHL-TV.
