Late Goal by Surma Gives Gems 2-1 Win Over Evansville

March 17, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release

DAYTON, OH - Heading into Thursday night, the Dayton Gems and Evansville IceMen had gone into overtime in their last five meetings.

It looked as though Thursday's game was going to be another game that went beyond regulation. The two teams spent nearly 45 minutes of the 60 minute game tied. But in the end, the Gems won 2-1 in regulation.

It was a goal by Dayton's Damian Surma that ended the game in regulation. With just 4:19 remaining, Surma recorded a powerplay goal to give the Gems a 2-1 win.

While the goal by Surma gave the Gems a win, Chris Lipsett was able to extend a streak of his own on the play. Lipsett recorded a point on Surma's game-winning goal. Lipsett has now recorded a point in 12 straight games.

During the game, Jonathan Ornelas scored the opening goal of the night in the second period. With the assists coming from Kyle Bochek and Ernie Stewart, the Gems were able to take a 1-0 lead.

The Gems were almost able to carry that lead into the third period, but Evansville was able to tie the game at 1-1 with a goal by Matt Pierce with just 41 seconds remaining in the period.

The score stayed that way through most of the third period. Ornelas had a chance to give the Gems a lead with a penalty shot at the 7:59 mark, but came up empty.

It was then Surma who was able to answer the call for the Gems.

These same two teams will face each other for the final time this season on Friday night in Evansville. The game will start at 8:35 p.m.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
