Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (March 17, 2011)- Bobby Hughes- who scored the game winning shorthanded goal with 2:54 left in the third period- and Troy Schwab both provided two goals and two assists as the Wichita Thunder battled to a wild 6-4 win over the host Quad City Mallards Thursday night.
Hughes delivered the deciding goal when he broke a 4-4 deadlock on a clean breakaway. With just 1:02 remaining in the game, Jesse Bennefield's empty net goal clinched the win for Wichita.
Earlier on, the Mallards had twice battled from behind to tie the game. Quad City's Brandon Marino replied with a rising backhander from the slot at 10:41 of the third after Schwab's solo rush had snapped a 3-3 tie and give the Thunder their second lead of the night at the 3:58 mark.
At 9:09 of the second period, the Mallards' Adam Maccarone scored from the high slot and knotted the game at three less than two minutes after the Thunder's third straight goal propelled Wichita into its first lead. Kory Scoran's point blank power play strike gave Wichita a 3-2 advantage at 7:26 of the second. Scoran's goal came on the heels of Schwab's game-tying drive from the high slot at 4:42.
The Thunder's recovery from a 2-0 deficit began when, with just 1:16 remaining in the first period, Bobby Hughes buried Bennefield's centering pass and trimmed the gap to a single goal.
The evening started with great promise for the Mallards when newly signed Jared Brown scored the opening goal just over four minutes into his professional debut. The rookie from the Northern Michigan University wristed the puck home from the right wing circle to give the Mallards a 1-0 lead. The lead doubled at 17:23 of the first period when Jake Riddle scored in a goalmouth scramble, but that would prove to be the high water mark for the Flock.
The Mallards next play Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Dayton Gems on home ice. The first 1,000 fans ages 12 and under through the doors for Saturday evening's game will receive free Mallards 40" hockey sticks courtesy of CBS 4 and Rock 104-9. Following Saturday night's game, the Mallards will team with the Genesis Foundations for a game worn live jersey auction that will benefit Genesis Concussion Management.
