Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (24-31-6) scored a pair of shorthanded goals but the Odessa Jackalopes (27-27-7) defeated the Killer Bees by a 5-2 score on Thursday night. Dominic D'Amour and Aaron Lewicki each scored shorthanded goals. For Lewicki the point was his 50th of the season.
Odessa potted the first goal of the game as Mike Lesperance found the back of the net just 3:35 into the game. Odessa struck again just four minutes later as Sebastien Thinel scored his 31st goal of the season and Jerad Kaufmann was stuck out of his net challenging a potential Philippe Plante shot.
Towards the end of the first period the Bees would send lots of rubber towards Odessa netminder Mike Mole but Mole made every save ending the period with 13 saves. Jerad Kaufmann finished the period turning away six of eight.
Odessa would add another pair of goals in the second period as Philippe Plante registered a power-play strike at 8:32 and Mike Lesperance would score his second of the night at 16:58.
The Bees once again put many shots on net registering 14 during the second but Mike Mole stayed strong making all the saves, 27 through the two periods. Odessa took 15 shots on net, 13 of which were turned away by Kaufmann.
The Killer Bees solved Mike Mole in the third period with a pair of shorthanded goals, both coming with Tomas Klempa in the box. Dominic D'Amour scored an unassisted goal at 5:05 of the third. D'Amour came in on a two-on-one with Aaron Lewicki and D'Amour took the short that just trickled through Mole.
Just 1:14 later Aaron Lewicki roofed a glove side shot for his 50th point in his rookie season. Brandon Smith and Darcy Campbell picked up the assists on the goal scored at 6:19.
The Bees would threaten for the rest of the period but were unable to cut the lead any further. Sebastien Thinel added an empty net goal in the Odessa victory.
The Killer Bees now travel to Odessa to face the Jackalopes on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Bees will then face the Allen Americans on Saturday night before returning to the Hive on Tuesday evening, once again facing the Odessa Jackalopes.
