Rome Emperors News Release
2020 fifth-round pick Bryce Elder produced a night to remember in his State Mutual Stadium debut on Friday, helping the Rome Braves (10-6) to a 6-1 win over the visiting Bowling Green Hot Rods (10-6). The former Texas Longhorn's success in shutting down the Hot Rod offense allowed the Braves to jump out to an early lead and hold onto it throughout the middle innings.
Rome claimed the lead in the first inning when a Michael Harris II double brought home Riley Delgado from first base. The 1-0 advantage was doubled in the bottom of the fifth as Beau Philip stole third base and scored on a throwing error. The R-Braves started to pour it on the next inning. A two-out fielding error allowed Logan Brown and Jesse Franklin to touch home plate, then Brett Langhorne came home on an RBI single by Kevin Josephina. Though the Hot Rods would score a run in the top of the seventh, the Braves got the run back in the following half-inning when Garrison Schwartz came in via a wild pitch. Marrick Crouse entered in the ninth, retiring the side and securing the five-run victory.
Riley Delgado was the only member of the Braves offense to record multiple hits on Friday night, as the second baseman finished 2-for-4 with one run scored. Delgado, a R-Brave veteran, is now hitting .273 on the season and is tied for the team lead with 11 runs.
Bryce Elder's performance earned him his first professional victory in the win over Bowling Green. The righty allowed just one earned run on five hits in 6.1 innings pitched. Elder, the No. 12 prospect in the Braves' farm system, struck out seven batters and issued zero bases on balls. Additionally, the solid outing lowers his ERA to 3.66.
The Braves have now won three of the first four contests of this six-game series with the Hot Rods. Friday night's win puts Rome along with Bowling Green atop the High-A East Southern Division standings. Rome will play the penultimate game of this home series against Bowling Green tomorrow night at State Mutual Stadium. The Braves would win the series outright and control first place in the division with a victory. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., and a fireworks display will immediately follow the game.
