Lake Erie Crushers News Release
CRESTWOOD, Ill. - The Lake Erie Crushers fell 2-1 to the Windy City ThunderBolts as Alberto Rolon and Andrew Werner battled in a pitcher's duel Tuesday afternoon at Standard Bank Stadium.
Rolon retired the first eleven Windy City batters of the game before Ryan Basham was able to bloop a single in front of Lake Erie left fielder Wayne Bond for the first ThunderBolt hit of the contest.
The Crushers had opportunities in the early going but could not convert, stranding runners in scoring position against Werner in the second and fifth frames while loading the bases in the sixth but failing to score.
Lake Erie finally broke through against Werner in the top half of the seventh. Julio Rivera picked up an infield single to deep shortstop before Dom Duggan bounced into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. Duggan stole second to put himself in scoring position for Jodam Rivera, who grounded a single past Nick Kuroczko at third base to give the Crushers a 1-0 lead.
Windy City would take the lead in the eighth however, as Pete Paris lined a single to right for the ThunderBolts' second hit of the day before Ryne White blasted a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw to put the home side ahead 2-1.
Rolon took the loss, pitching seven innings, allowing just the three hits and two runs, walking one and striking out five.
Werner's complete game was the first nine-inning complete game against Lake Erie this season. He scattered nine hits, striking out two and walking two on his way to his seventh victory.
The Crushers begin a series with the Washington Wild Things at Consol Energy Park Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Josh Roberts (6-1, 1.96) gets the ball for the Crushers and will face RHP Jeff Sonnenberg (2-6, 3.68).
EXTRA SWINGS:
The Crushers fell to 1-5 in day games with Tuesday's loss.
Rolon's seven innings were a career high for the converted reliever. His previous high was six.
The Crushers loss meant they were swept for just the second time this season.
