Evansville Otters News Release

(EVANSVILLE, Ind.) - Nick D'Amico had four runs batted in as the Evansville Otters shut out the first-place Southern Illinois Miners 5-0 on Tuesday night.

The victory is the first series win for the Evansville Otters since July 11 th and secures back to back wins against Southern Illinois.

Otters pitcher Chris Peters and Miners starter Joe Augustine dueled against each other in a very low scoring game.

Peters received the start of some strong defense in the second inning when Greg Alexander made a leaping catch against the wall. The Otters then took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a Nick D'Amico RBI single to center field.

Ahead 1-0, Peters would take the shutout into the sixth inning when the lefty found himself in a jam. With two runners on and one out, manager Andy McCauley brought in the right-hander Eduardo Perez. The pitcher responded by striking out Brad Netzel and Jordin Hood to keep the Miners scoreless.

The game remained 1-0 into the bottom of the seventh inning when Otters catcher Billy Killian blooped the baseball to center field. The ball just fell in front of Jereme Milons as Vinnie Scarduzio scored the insurance run.

Jason Roenicke preserved the 2-0 lead with a scoreless eighth inning as Evansville rallied for more runs in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and two outs, Nick D'Amico struck again with a three-run bases-clearing double to right field.

Staked to a 5-0 lead, closer Jared Simon came in to pitch the ninth inning and received more sparkling defense. On a broken bat grounder, Brian Kolb started a double play to a barehanding shortstop Andre Alvarado. The swift fielder relayed the throw to first base, ending the game, and sending the crowd of 2199 fans into a cheering frenzy. It was the second double play of the game and second straight win for Evansville over Southern Illinois.

The win goes to Chris Peters (1-7) who threw 5 1/3 shutout innings in his very first win of the season. Joe Augustine (7-3) receives the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) in his 7 1/3 innings.

Evansville improves to 21-38 this season with the win as Southern Illinois drops to 44-16.

The Otters look to continue the momentum tomorrow night as the team starts a nine game roadtrip against the Gateway Grizzlies. It will be a three game series at G-C-S Ballpark with first pitch set for 7:05 PM CDT.
