Gateway Grizzlies News Release
NORMAL, Ill.- Normal's Ross McCoy scored on a wild pitch in the 10th inning Tuesday night to lift the CornBelters to a 6-5 extra-inning win over the Gateway Grizzlies at the Corn Crib.
Tuesday's loss capped a six-game road trip for the Grizzlies and was the second extra-inning loss on the trip. Gateway finished the trip 2-4.
The CornBelters (27-33) loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th against Grizzlies reliever Jake Shafer. McCoy doubled to start the inning. John Ross reached on a bunt single and Asif Shah was intentionally passed. David Miller came in to relieve Shafer, and unloaded the wild pitch on his first delivery of the game. Shafer suffered the loss to fall to 1-2.
Trailing 5-4 in the ninth inning, The Grizzlies (31-29) loaded the bases with one out. Gateway tied the game when Charlie Lisk lined a sacrifice fly to right. Donnie Ecker scored on the play to even the score. Ecker was pinch-running for Breck Draper who had walked earlier in the inning.
The Grizzlies struck first, when Draper lined a two-out, two-run homer to left in the top of the third inning to put the Grizzlies up 2-0.
Normal answered with three runs in the home half of the inning to go up 3-2.
Tyler Heil tied the game in the fourth with a single to score Jason Patton, who had doubled. Both hits came with two outs in the inning.
Normal led 5-3 in the seventh inning when Lisk pulled the Grizzlies within a run with an RBI single that scored Brandon Peters.
Lisk finished 2 for 3. He now has 50 RBIs to lead the Frontier League. Peters was 3 for 4 for the Grizzlies, who out-hit the CornBelters 10-9 in the game.
The Grizzlies return home to open a three-game series with the Evansville Otters at GCS Ballpark Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
