Montgomery Biscuits News Release
PEARL, MS - The Biscuits (10-13) used strong pitching and timely hitting to slip past the Mississippi Braves (10-12), 3-2, on Saturday night at Trustmark Park.
The Biscuits broke a 2-2 tie with the eventual game-winning run in the eighth inning. J.T. Hall led off against M-Braves reliever Bryan Dumesnil with a bunt-single to set the stage. Hall advanced to second on a groundout from Fernando Cortez and scored when Cesar Suarez singled through the left side of the infield to give Montgomery the lead, 3-2. Dumesnil (1-3) was tagged with his third loss of the season.
For the eighth consecutive road game, the Biscuits struck first. They plated two runs off of Mississippi starter Deunte Heath in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead. Jason Bowers started the rally with a one-out single and advanced to second base when Heath walked Hall. Rashad Eldridge followed with an RBI single to center field to score Bowers and Cortez replicated the feat to score Hall.
Mississippi got a run back off of Montgomery starter Heath Rollins in the second when Greg Creek led off with a triple under the diving attempt of Desmond Jennings in right field. Concepcion Rodriguez followed and brought Creek home with a sacrifice fly to right field to narrow the Montgomery lead to 2-1.
The M-Braves then tied the game in the third, when Brandon Hicks led off the inning with a double off the wall in center field. He advanced to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI single from Travis Jones to tie the game, 2-2.
Rollins (2-1) earned the win for the Biscuits, turning in the longest outing for a Biscuits' starter this season (7.0 IP), and allowing just two runs on seven hits. Rollins struck out two and walked one in the victory.
Rollins handed it off to the bullpen and Eddie Morlan worked a scoreless inning in the eighth before turning it over to closer Calvin Medlock in the ninth. The M-Braves mounted a challenge, putting runners at the corners with two down, before Medlock flied out Hicks to center field to end the ballgame. Medlock earned his fourth save of the season, while Morlan stretched his consecutive scoreless inning string to 14 innings.
Heath worked into the seventh inning before departing after 6 1/3 innings. He received a no-decision after allowing six hits and striking out a season-high nine batters.
Game four of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1:05 at Trustmark Park. LHP Ryan Morse (1-3, 5.17) will make the start for Montgomery against LHP Jonny Venters (0-1, 1.47) for Mississippi.
