Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- Gaby Martinez's seventh inning grand slam snapped a 1-1 tie to lift Chattanooga to a 5-1 victory over Carolina at Five County Stadium before 3,048 fans on Sunday afternoon.
Martinez socked a two-strike pitch from reliever Sean Watson (L, 0-2) over the centerfield wall to move the Lookouts (9-15) into a fourth place tie with Carolina (9-15) in the Northern Division. The fateful seventh began with a hit batsman, with a single and walk following the first out.
Carolina nosed ahead 1-0 in the fifth against Scott Elbert on a sacrifice fly by Jose Castro. Elbert was appearing in his first game since being reassigned to the minors from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Elbert, the 17th overall pick in the 2004 draft, worked five innings, permitting four hits and striking out six.
Meanwhile, James Avery's follow-up to his eighth-inning start against Tennessee Tuesday night was solid again until an injury took him out of the game in the sixth. The Lookouts placed the leadoff hitter aboard in five of six Avery innings, but the Mudcat starter never blinked. Avery stranded six baserunners and held Chattanooga to 0-8 hitting with runners in scoring position. In the sixth, Avery permitted a single to Jamie Hoffman, then moved ahead of Martinez 0-2 before having to leave the game due to an undisclosed injury. Watson relieved, retiring the first batter he faced before walking two hitters to fill the bases. Lucas May hit a game-tying sac fly to even the score at 1. Avery surrendered four hits over his five-plus innings, one run on three walks and three strikeouts.
Carolina had six hits in the game with Todd Frazier collecting a pair of singles. Chris Heisey had the only extra base hit for the Mudcats, a third inning double while walking twice.
Watson was charged with four unearned runs over his 1 2/3 innings. Ramon Geronimo worked the final 2 1/3 innings, yielding just two walks with two strikeouts.
The first half of Carolina's 10-game homestand concludes on Monday night with Misael DeJesus (1-2, 9.92) matching against James Adkins (0-2, 7.45) at 7:15 PM ET.
