Rogers, Jensen Clip Redbirds 1-0
August 26, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Jared Rogers pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and made Kyle Jensen's second-inning home run stand up as the New Orleans Zephyrs beat the Memphis Redbirds, 1-0 on Monday night.
The shutout was the 11th of the season for the Zephyrs, who lead the Pacific Coast League with a 3.58 team ERA.
Rogers (7-4) had his longest outing in more than two years, since tossing seven innings for Class A Greensboro in June 2011. He scattered five hits, struck out three and walked one in earning his team-leading seventh victory of the year.
The right-hander exited the game in the seventh with runners at the corners and two outs. James Leverton came on to retire pinch-hitter Brock Peterson on a fly out to preserve the lead, and after Jonathan Albaladejo recorded two outs in the eighth, Chris Hatcher set down the side in order in the ninth to record his 33rd save, tying the PCL's single-season record set by Ryan Speier in 2007.
Memphis starter Scott McGregor (5-10) struck out nine batters in six innings. The home run by Jensen with two outs in the second cleared the wall in right-center field for the only scoring. Jensen added a single in the fifth inning, accounting for two of the Zephyrs' three hits, equaling their season low.
The Redbirds did not have an extra-base hit, and were held to 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Memphis was unable to gain ground on first-place Omaha, who lost in Iowa and maintains a two-game cushion in the American Northern Division with seven games left in the season.
The Z's have won eight of 10 games, and continue their final homestand of the 2013 campaign on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
