Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Des Moines, IA - Yoanner Negrin tossed a complete game six-hitter as Iowa squeezed past Omaha, 2-1, Monday night in the opener of a four-game set at Principal Park. The Storm Chasers dipped to 67-70 but maintained their two-game lead over Memphis in the American Conference North Division with seven games to go in the regular season. The Storm Chasers magic number to clinch their third straight division title was reduced to six after the Redbirds were blanked 1-0 in New Orleans.
Irving Falu opened the game with a single and advanced on a one-out double by Johnny Giavotella but ran through a stop sign at third base and was thrown out at the plate. However, Ben Broussard followed with a base hit that delivered Giavotella to put the visitors in front before Iowa got the game tied in the third on an Edgar Gonzalez run-scoring single. Jae-Hoon Ha opened the fourth with a base hit and scored what turned out to be the game-winning run on a two-out RBI double by Ty Wright off of Storm Chasers starter Justin Marks. The left-hander, taking the place of scheduled starter Danny Duffy, suffered his second hard-luck loss at Iowa this season after he tossed six innings, giving up those two runs on eight hits while walking two and fanning five. Marks has received just a single run of support while allowing three runs on 11 hits over 12 innings in his two starts across the state line.
Negrin yielded only three singles after the first inning and finished the game by retiring the last 10 batters he faced and 16 out of the last 17 to author his first nine-inning effort since coming to the United States to pitch two years ago after defecting from Cuba. The Storm Chasers were held to fewer than 10 hits for a 14th consecutive game, of which they have lost eight.
The series continues Tuesday night with Omaha left-hander Chris Dwyer taking the mound against Iowa right-hander Justin Grimm. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:15 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
