Rodriguez lifts Dillas to first-place over Edinburg 9-8

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas had a back-and-forth game with the Edinburg Roadrunners, but a 3-5 day from Joaquin Rodriguez, including a homerun, the Dillas won 9-8 and took over first place from the Roadrunners in front of 1,843 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa on Thursday night.

Dillas reliever Corey Bass (1-0) got the win, going an inning and two-thirds, allowing just one hit and no runs. Edinburg starter Jose Pablo Oyervides (2-2) got the loss, allowing seven of the Dillas runs in an out short of six innings. Amarillo closer Ramon Geronimo got his 21st save, despite allowing two runs in the ninth.

For the third straight game, the Roadrunners took a first inning lead. Wilmer Pino led off with a triple and scored on a Felix Molina RBI single. Molina would score on a Daryl Jones RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

Amarillo immediately responded as Adam De La Garza walked and scored on a pass ball in the first inning while Rob Recuenco hit a bases loaded single to score Julio Martinez and Stephen Douglas. Kevin Butler followed with an RBI single to score Alberto Cruz for a 4-2 Dillas lead.

Edinburg responded with a run in the second on a Nelson Teilon RBI groundout, but the Dillas struck back in the third. Martinez led off with a double, went to third on a Douglas single and scored on a Recuenco fielder's choice. Butler followed with a single to score Douglas for a 6-3 advantage.

The Roadrunners got a run back in the fourth on a solo homerun from Alexis Hernandez and tied the game in the sixth. Carlos Hereaud led off with a double and went to third on a Hernandez single. Pino singled to score Hereaud while Hernandez scored on an error for a 6-6 tie game.

Rodriguez untied the game with one swing of the bat in the sixth with his sixth homerun of the season for a one-run lead. In the seventh, Recuenco hit a two-out single and scored on a hit-and-run single by Butler. Rodriguez hit an RBI double in the eighth for a 9-6 Dillas lead.

The Roadrunners put a scare into the Dillas in the ninth. Jones led off with a hit-by-pitch and went to second on a Hereaud walk. Hernandez doubled down the line to score Jones while Hereaud scored on an error. Geronimo then struck out Robert Matlock and Pino to end the game with the Dillas victorious 9-8.

With the win, the Dillas improve to 51-36 while the Roadrunners fall to 49-36. Friday, Amarillo will take on the Roadrunners for the final game of a four-game set at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 6:50pm on AudioSportsOnline via www.myamarillodillas.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
