Dillas split doubleheader with Roadrunners, maintain first place tie

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas avoided a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Edinburg Roadrunners with a comeback victory in game two 11-10 after falling in game one 9-3 in front of 1,842 fans on Wednesday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.

In game one, the Roadrunners started early with three first-inning runs off three hits and an error. In the second, Felix Molina hit an RBI double for a 4-0 Edinburg advantage. They continued scoring in the third as 10 batters came to the plate, seven of them had hits and five scored for a 9-0 lead.

Amarillo got on the board in the fourth as Julio Martinez led off with a double, went to third on a Stephen Douglas single, while Alberto Cruz and Rob Recuenco both received free passes to load the bases. Jermel Lomack walked to score Douglas for the first Dillas runs. In the sixth, Douglas led off with a triple and scored on a Cruz sacrifice fly while Recuenco reached on an error and scored on a Lomack RBI single for a six-run deficit. While Amarillo reliever Chris Ingoglia kept the Roadrunners scoreless for the remainder of the game, the Dillas batters brought home more in the seventh on an RBI double from Douglas, but lost game one 9-4.

In game two, Edinburg got another three-run first inning as Wilmer Pino scored on a Nelson Teilon RBI single, while Teilon scored on an Ambiorix Concepcion two-run homerun for a 3-0 lead. The Dillas immediately responded as Adam De La Garza led off with a walk, went to second on a Joaquin Rodriguez single and scored on a Carlos Figueroa RBI single. Rodriguez would score on a bases loaded walk to Recuenco for a 3-2 score.

The Roadrunners added two in the third for a three-run advantage while the Dillas tied the game in the third. Cruz led off with a hit-by-pitch, went to second on a Recuenco single and went to third on a Lomack single to load the bases. De La Garza walked to score Cruz, Rodriguez grounded out to score Recuenco while Lomack scored on a wild pitch for a 5-5 tie game.

Edinburg retook the lead in the fourth as with five runs off four hits and an error for a five-run lead. In the fifth, the Dillas struck back with a grand slam from Martinez and a two-run error for an 11-10 Amarillo advantage.

Tyler Pearson and Ramon Geronimo finished off the Roadrunners to preserve the comeback victory in game two.

With the win and loss, the Dillas improve to 50-36 while the Roadrunners improve to 49-35. Thursday, Amarillo will take on the Roadrunners for the third game of a four-game set at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 6:50pm on AudioSportsOnline via www.myamarillodillas.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
