
Roadrunners Fall to Second Place with Loss

AMARILLO, Texas---After a back and forth ball game the Edinburg Roadrunners have fallen into second place in the United League standings after a 9-8 loss to the Amarillo Dillas Thursday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.
Edinburg and Amarillo have clinched playoff spots but are fighting for the first seed and home field advantage in the playoffs.
The Roadrunners (49-36) got on the board in the top of the first. Wilmer Pino led off the game with a triple to right center field and then he came into score on an RBI single by Felix Molina. After one out, Ambiorix Concepcion hit a single to left field to put runners at first and third. Daryl Jones then hit an RBI single allowing Molina to score making it 2-0 Edinburg.
The Dillas (51-36) responded back in the bottom of the first against Jose Pablo Oyervidez (2-2). A walk to Adam De La Garza started the inning and then a fielding error allowed Joaquin Rodriguez to reach putting runners on the corners. After two outs, a wild pitch allowed De La Garza to score from third. Three straight walks loaded the bases for Rob Recuenco who hit a two-run single scoring Julio Martinez and Stephen Douglas. Keven Butler followed with an RBI single that allowed Alberto Cruz to score giving Amarillo the 4-2 lead.
Robert Matlock started the top of the second with a walk and then moved to third after a fielding error by third baseman Recuenco. With runners on the corners, Nelson Teilon drove in Matlock with an RBI ground out cutting the Dillas lead 4-3.
In the bottom of the third, Amarillo extended their lead with an RBI fielder's choice by Recuenco and an RBI single by Kevin Butler that allowed Douglas to score making it 6-3.
Alexis Hernandez hit a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth off of Ryan Mitchell cutting into Amarillo's lead 6-4.
Back-to-back hits by Carlos Hereaud and Hernandez started the top of the sixth for the Roadrunners. One out later, Pino hit an RBI single allowing Hereaud to score from third. A fielding error by the Dillas defense allowed Hernandez to score tying the game at six.
Amarillo regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run by Rodriguez, his sixth of the season, making it 7-6 Dillas.
An RBI single by Butler in the bottom of the seventh allowed Recuenco to score from first extending the Amarillo lead 8-6.
After the Dillas added a run in the bottom of the eighth, the Roadrunners managed two runs in the top of the ninth. Reliever Ramon Geronimo hit Jones with a pitch to start the inning. One out later, Hereaud walked and Hernandez followed with a two-run double to right field. Geronimo then got the final out leaving the tying run at third to give Amarillo the 9-8 victory.
The Roadrunners and Dillas will play the final game of this four-game series Friday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa. Wardell Starling is expected to pitch for Edinburg with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
