Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals took over sole possession of first place in the North Division lead by Bryan Rodney's four-point night with a 5-1 win over the Wheeling Nailers Sunday night at WesBanco Arena before 2,018 fans.

Trailing 1-0 after the opening period, the Jackals went to work just seventy- five seconds in enroute to scoring three unanswered goals in the middle frame.

Chaz Johnson pushed home a rebound 1:15 into the period on feeds from Rodney (two goals and two assists) and Scott May (three assists) to tie the contest at 1-1.

Johnson was at the center of the go-ahead goal from defenseman Trevor Hendrikx that put the Jackals up 2-1 at 7:26 though he didn't get on the score sheet for his effort.

Pierre-Luc Faubert (two assists) threw a shot to the net that Nailers goaltender Ray Jean (33 saves) kicked away off of his left leg. Johnson drove the net for the rebound that deflected away from the crease and Johnson ended up putting himself on the crossbar as Jean was down on the ice.

As Jean was trying to regain his skates, there was slight contact with Johnson, who was still on the goal frame as Hendrikx rifled home his second goal of the year.

Elmira bumped its lead to 3-1 with a power play goal from Rodney. His low blast beat Jean on the stick side with 3:01 left in the frame as the Jackals took over the second by outshooting the Nailers 16-5.

Chris Busby and Rodney struck for power play goals in the third period to close out the scoring as Elmira finished the night going 3-for-8 on the man advantage.

Joel Martin finished with 23 saves in picking up his league-leading 11th win of the year, but left late in the third period with an apparent upper body injury.

With the win, the Jackals now have 34 points and broke a tie atop the North Division with idle Cincinnati.

The Jackals return home to First Arena for two games this weekend, Friday against Reading and Saturday with Trenton in town. Face-off both nights is set for 7:35 p.m. and good seats still available by calling 734-PUCK (7825).
