Jackals Rally For 5-4 Shootout Win In Cincinnati
December 9, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
Defenseman Bryan Rodney scored twice in regulation and once in the shootout as the Elmira Jackals trimmed the Cincinnati Cyclones 5-4 Saturday night at U.S Bank Arena before 1,554 fans. The win enabled the Jackals to regain a share of first place in the North Division with the Cyclones, each with 32 points.
Elmira gained the bonus point in the shootout after putting together a third period comeback effort that saw the club enter the final twenty minutes by a 4-2 count.
The Jackals got off on the right foot when Rodney's first goal opened the scoring 10:29 into the game, driving a shot past Dov Grumet-Morris (29 saves) off of a feed along the wall from Scott May. It was his third of the year and his first goal with Elmira since being acquired December 1st.
The Jackals doubled their with 1:16 left in the first as Benoit Doucet intercepted a puck at the Cyclones line and started Pierre-Luc Faubert into the zone. Faubert turned from the backhand to the forehand and snapped home his eight of the season to make it 2-0 at the end of one period.
Penalty problems plagued the Jackals for a five-minute stretch in the second period that saw the club face three separate 5-on-3 disadvantages and sparked the Cyclones offense. Cincinnati stormed back during that stretch on a pair of goals from defenseman Tyler Howells, the first coming during a two-man advantage and the second, a four-on-four goal, tied the game at 2-2 at 10:19.
Cincinnati took their only lead of the night as Jean-Michel Daoust wired a wrister from the right circle past Joel Martin (28 saves) at 15:06 to make it 3-2.
Gerard Miller ended the second period onslaught in which the Cyclones out shot the Jackals 18-9, scoring his third of the season with sixty-seven seconds left in the period for a 4-2 advantage.
Blue line scoring would spark a Jackals comeback in the third and the defense would be key as the Jackals allowed a season-low three shots on goal to Cincinnati.
Joe Grimaldi pulled Elmira to within 4-3 when he scored his second goal 5:46 into the third period. Both of Grimaldi's goals have come against the Cyclones.
The Jackals completed the comeback as Chris Busby rang a shot of the goal post and Rodney collected the rebound and drilled the tying goal home from the right circle with 6:11 left in regulation.
The teams traded scoring chances in the overtime period with each side registering two shots. Cincinnati had the best chance as Thomas Beauregard split the Jackals defense and broke in alone on Martin, who stonewalled him with a left pad stop.
For the seventh time in seven overtime games, the Jackals would go to a shootout, blanking the hosts on two shootout goals from May and Rodney while Cyclones went 0-for-4.
Each of the Jackals' last four wins have come in a shootout as the club has won 13 of their last 16 games overall.
Elmira concludes a three-game road weekend with a Sunday night visit to Wheeling against a Nailers club that lost its seventh consecutive game Saturday night, 6-3 in Reading. The clubs meet for just the second this season in a 6:05 p.m. face-off at WesBanco Arena. Radio coverage with the Hill Top Inn Countdown to Face-Off begins at 5:35 p.m. on MAGIC FM (92.7/97.7).
