Rocky Mountain Rage Re-Lights Fire with 2-1 Home Victory

December 29, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Broomfield, Colo. - The snowy weather outside did not stop the Rocky Mountain Rage hockey team from heating up the ice inside. Rocky Mountain snapped an eight game winless streak tonight with a 2-1 win over the Austin Ice Bats at the Broomfield Event Center. Rocky Mountain improves to a 7-16-3 record while Austin falls to 11-11-5 on the season.

Left winger Adam Stefishen, defenseman and captain Dan Vandermeer earned the only goals for Rocky Mountain, while goaltender David Guerrera stopped 29 shots for the win. Tonight's game was the only meeting between the two teams this season.

The first period started off sluggish by both teams after the holiday break. Both teams remained scoreless in the period, but Rocky Mountain led in shots on goal 12-9.

Austin's Terry Virtue drew the first goal of the game at 2:08 of the second period short-handed from passes by Jason Kenyon and Julian Smith. Rage captain Dan Vandermeer answered back on the powerplay shooting the puck top shelf from the glove side of Austin's goaltender Kevin Couture at 6:34 to tie the game. Three minutes later, Stefishen gave the Rage their first lead of the game also shooting the puck high over the right shoulder of Couture.

Momentum picked up for both teams in the third period. At 11:34, Dominic Noel arguably gave the Rage their best scoring chance of the period skating two-on-one and firing the puck high to the stick side of Couture, but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Austin also earned several scoring chances of their own, but did not follow through on any in the period. The Ice Bats went 0 for 8 on the powerplay while the Rage went 1-9. As time ran out, Stefishen's goal in the second period would eventually prove to be the game-winner.

What You Might Have Missed: Tonight's referee Ian Croft is a former teammate of Rage forward Chip Dunleavy. Both played on a championship Midget AA team in Arvada, Colo.

The Rage returns to road on Sunday (Dec. 31) when they play the Oklahoma City Blazers for their final game of 2006. Fans can listen online at www.RockyMountainRage.com or over the radio live on AM Z560 with the pre-game show starting at 6:25 p.m.
