The Bucks had three power play chances in the first period, but neither team was able to score.
Early in the second Bucks rookie forward Neil Clark connected for his first pro goal 2:36 into the frame to put the Bucks up 1-0. The Killer Bees tied it on the power play when defenseman Kurtis Dulle ripped a slap shot from the top of the left circle at 10:30.
In the third period Rio Grande Valley took their first lead of the game as forward Bill Newson cut off the right wall to the slot and scored on a backhander on a power play at 8:55. Late in regulation time the Bucks pulled the goalie looking to tie the game. Forward Jeff Bes found Chaumont in the slot for a one-timer to tie the game at 2-2 with just 1:26 left in regulation. The game headed to overtime.
Late in sudden death Rio Grande Valley defenseman Rob Carrigan unleashed a rising slap shot from the top of the right circle that broke the mask of Bucks goalie Kevin Reiter. Reiter was cut and his goalie mask was broken, but after getting a new mask he stayed in the game for the shootout.
In the shootout Reiter stopped three of four and the Bucks beat Killer Bees goalie Jeremy Symington three times on four tries with Chaumont getting credit for the game winner. FINAL SCORE Laredo 3, Rio Grande Valley 2 in a shootout.
Reiter played 64:46 and stopped 26 of 28 shots, plus three of four in the shootout, to improve to 3-1-0. Symington took a tough luck loss allowing just two goals on 31 shots, but three of four in the shootout, and fell to 9-5-1. The Bucks were 0-6 on the power play, while Rio Grande Valley was 2-3. Laredo out shot the Killer Bees 31-29.
