December 29, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

The Youngstown SteelHounds and the Memphis Riverkings went at it Friday night in the most entertaining and heart wrenching of battles as a wild game goes to a shootout where the Riverkings defeated the Hounds 6-5 at the Chevrolet Centre.

Memphis set the pace early in the first period as Rick Kozak was able to score his first of two on the night at 3:31 after a stealing a pass to make it 1-0 Kings. The scoring was nowhere near complete as Ryan Held would score his fifth of the season at 5:24 to make it 2-0 and send this game into a blowout.

The SteelHounds said not so fast to that as Brad Patterson would open up the flood gates for Youngstown scoring his first goal just 15 seconds after the Held goal to make it 2-1. He was not done yet as 10 minutes later Patterson would score again, this time from Chris Richards and Jeff Christian to tie the game at two after one period. For Christian the assist (two on the night) would extend his league leading point streak to a remarkable 14 games.

In the second period there would be a brawl involving multiple players from both teams right at the midway point. The brawl would see nobody ejected but a total of five penalties handed out. This came after Derek Landmesser scored his sixth of the season, this on the power play (Memphis 3-6 on pp.) at 2:17 to make it 3-2 Memphis. Youngstown though would answer right back as Brad Patterson would score again, giving him the team's first hat trick of the season to make it 3-3 early in the second period.

The goals kept coming as Rick Kozak would put in his second of the night (11 on season) with a power play goal at 5:13 to make it 4-3. Then the Youngstown veteran and all star, Chris Richards would take charge scoring two straight goals, both on the power play to make it 5-4 Hounds after two periods. Richards also had two assists on the night moving him to 18 goals and 32 assists for 42 points on the season which still trails fellow all star, Jeff Christian who now has 51 points after last night.

The third period would only see one goal scored and it would be with 2:39 to go as Phil Aucoin would score his fourth of the year with a key power play goal to force the game to overtime. The overtime would be a stand-still as we went to a shootout. In the shootout it would be Chris Richards getting the lone goal for the Hounds but it would not be enough as Travis Banga would put in the game winner in round five to put Memphis up 2-1 and give them the 6-5 victory over Y-Town.

The SteelHounds still get a point out of the game and move to 14-7-6 for 34 points but now trail Memphis by five points in the Northeast division as the Riverkings improved to 18-6-3 for 39 points. These two teams lock horns again tonight at 7:05pm at the Chevy Centre as fans have a chance to win auctioned off specialty Elvis Jerseys after the game.
