Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Salem, VA - Homers by Dennicher Carrasco and Blake Perkins helped the Wilmington Blue Rocks rally from two early deficits on their way to a 7-4 victory over the Salem Red Sox on Thursday at Haley Toyota Field. With the win Wilmington secured a series triumph and wrapped up its eight-game, seven-day road trip with a 6-2 mark. The Blue Crew are five games clear of the Lynchburg Hillcats and Frederick Keys in the CL North standings with 22 contests remaining in the season's opening half.
Colby Schultz led the way for the Rocks with three hits, two RBI and a run scored. His third-inning single plated Ricky Aracena to knot the game at 1-1. Carrasco used Wilmington's first homer of the night to tie the contest again in the fourth.
The Blue Crew went ahead for the first time in the fifth courtesy of a two-run double from Nick Pratto, which plated Schultz and Perkins. That duo would pad the lead later in the contest. Schultz's seeing-eye single in the sixth brought home Rudy Martin, while Perkins' two-run laser in the eighth easily cleared the left-field fence.
Marcelo Martinez battled his way through five frames, allowing just two runs despite eight hits and three walks to earn the win. Cole Snider entered with the Rocks up two runs in the seventh. He stranded an inherited runner and yielded just an unearned run over the final 2.1 frames to nail down his first save. Kutter Crawford surrendered four runs thanks in large part to five walks in just 4.1 innings to take the loss for Salem.
The Rocks open a four-game homestand on Friday against Myrtle Beach. Daniel Tillo takes the mound as first pitch is slated for 7:05 P.M. Fans can get tickets at BlueRocks.com or catch all the action with the Voice of the Blue Rocks, Cory Nidoh on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
Dennicher Carrasco went more than 11 months without hitting a home run. Now the Blue Rocks infielder has three over his last eight games. Carrasco launched another long ball on Thursday at Salem. Blake Perkins also added a homer in the road trip finale. As a team the Rocks have found much more success leaving the yard away from the friendly confines of Frawely Stadium. Wilmington has hit 16 of its 19 home runs this year on the road.
Four has been the magic number for the Wilmington offense in 2019. When the Rocks score four times in a game they are 17-2 on the year. Conversely, when Wilmington manages just three scores or fewer in an affair the team is only 12-16.
Despite sitting atop the CL North for almost 80 percent of the season the Blue Rocks offense continues to be a work in progress. Wilmington won on Thursday despite getting out-hit 12-10. The Blue Crew actually have managed fewer hits than their opponents in 15 of their 29 wins in 2019. Overall the Rocks rank last in the CL in runs scored, hits, batting average and on-base percentage.
Wilmington has had an odd schedule to start the 2019 season. Wilmington opened the campaign with a series against Salem and then played 17 consecutive games against CL South opponents. The Rocks went 9-8 during that stretch. The Blue Crew followed with a stretch that just wrapped up where they played 24 out of 26 against the CL North. The Rocks went 17-7 during this divisional-heavy portion of the slate and are 17-9 on the year against CL North foes.
