Rocks snap three game losing skid

Wilmington, DE --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (27-31) opened up a three game series on Monday night with the best team in the Carolina League, the Kinston Indians (39-18), CL affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Solid starting pitching by Gary Gelvez and an early offensive surge sent Wilmington to a 5-1 win and back into first place in the Northern Division.

The Blue Rocks jumped on starter Joe Ness early plating three runs in the first inning. Bryan Pritz led off the inning with a home run to left field, his second of the year. It was also the first time this year the Blue Rocks have led off a game with a home run. Jeff Corsaletti followed up with a walk then Jeff Natale connected for an RBI double. John Otness moved Natale up to third with a one out single and Andrew Pinckney followed up with an RBI sac-fly to center scoring Natale.

The Blue Rocks pushed the lead to 5-0 in the third inning. John Otness doubled with one out in the frame and Scott White walked with two outs. Mickey Hall then reached on the fielding error from third baseman Matt Whitney to load the bases up. Iggy Suarez followed up with a two-run single to increase the lead.

Blue Rocks starter Gary Galvez got the no-decision pitching four plus innings. Galvez started the fifth but could not get an out allowing a walk and two singles to load the bases up.

Beau Vaughan came in relief and allowed one run to score on a fielder's choice to make it 5-1. Vaughan then struck out Brian Barton for the second out and retired Stephen Head on a ground ball out to end the threat and inning.

Vaughan (1-4) recorded his first win of the season working three innings and allowing no runs on three hits while walking one and striking out three.

Galvez allowed one run on five hits while walking three and striking out five. Galvez struck out the lead-off batter in each of the first four innings.

Joe Ness (5-1) took the loss allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits over four innings. Ness walked four and did not strike out a batter.

The Blue Rocks added another insurance run in the eighth win Iggy Suarez led off the frame with a home run to left, his second of the year.

The Blue Rocks continue their home stand and series on Tuesday night with Kinston. The Blue Rocks will send left-hander Tommy Hottovy (4-4, 2.53) to the mound. Kinston will counter with left-hander Scott Lewis (1-1, 0.80). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes: John Otness was lifted for a pinch hitter in fourth because of an arm injury. Otness was 2-for-2 with a single, double and run scored.

Kyle Jackson pitched the final two innings striking out three and not allowing a single base runner.

Damon's Grill Player of the Game Iggy Suarez - 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI's and a run scored.
