Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, DE (JUNE 14, 2012) - The Wilmington Blue Rocks snapped the Dash's six-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory Thursday night at Frawley Stadium.
The Dash (42-25-1) still have a magic number of two with three games remaining after second-place Salem's 4-3 victory over Carolina. Winston-Salem can still clinch a Southern Division first half crown as early as Friday night if the Dash win and the Red Sox lose to the Mudcats.
Wilmington (29-38) posted consecutive two-run frames to earn the narrow victory. With the bases loaded and two out, Angel Franco singled home a pair in the bottom of the fifth against Dash starter Steve McCray, who only surrendered those two runs on three hits in a no decision.
One inning later, Brett Eibner tripled home a tally and came around two batters later on a Geulin Beltre RBI single. Both of those runs came against Justin Collop (6-2), who tossed three innings of relief but suffered the loss.
Winston-Salem designated hitter Cyle Hankerd continued his tear through the Carolina League with solo shots in his first two at bats. Hankerd hit a line drive shot to left-center field in the second and a towering blast down the left field line three innings later for the first two runs of the contest. Hankerd is hitting .417 (10-for-24) with five homers and seven RBI in seven games with the Dash.
Dan Black plated Winston's other tally in the sixth inning with a single that scored Carlos Sanchez. However, the Dash only mustered four hits and eight base runners all evening long.
Wilmington's bullpen held the Dash hitless in the final three and a third frames to snap its eight-game losing streak. Sam Runion (1-1) stranded the bases loaded in the sixth before cruising through the seventh and eighth. Nick Rogers followed suit with a perfect ninth inning for his eighth save.
The Dash and Blue Rocks continue this four-game series Friday night at 7:05. Winston-Salem sends southpaw Spencer Arroyo (4-3, 4.72 ERA) to the mound against Carolina League All-Star Sugar Ray Marimon (4-1, 2.05 ERA).
BB&T Ballpark will host the California-Carolina League All-Star Game, presented by BB&T, this Tuesday night at 7:15. Tickets are still available, and fans can log on to wsdash.com or call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 to secure their seats.
