MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, got a solid surprise start from Kyle DeVore Thursday, but couldn't capitalize, falling 5-4 to the visiting Potomac Nationals in front of 4,057 at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

DeVore, making his first career start, was informed he would pitch less than two hours before the game. The righty replaced scheduled starter Nick Tepesch, who was informed after batting practice that he was being promoted to Double-A Frisco in the place of Justin Grimm, who will debut in the Majors Saturday for Texas. DeVore pitched admirably, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings. It was a career long start for DeVore, who did not allow a hit until his second turn through the order, and was hurt by a two-run homerun from Ricky Hague in the fifth.

The Pelicans saved DeVore from a losing decision with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at four. Tomas Telis began the rally with a leadoff single against Potomac starter Matt Grace. Vin DiFazio then walked two batters ahead of a Josh Richmond RBI single. Cafe Martinez extended his hitting streak to nine with a two run single to cap the comeback.

Potomac was able to scratch across one more run late, however, scoring off reliever Francisco Mendoza in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Hague.

Now 34-33, the Pelicans host the Nationals at 7:05 on Friday. It's Children's Storybook Night at the park. For more information or to order tickets, call 843-918-6000 or head online to MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
