Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
LOVES PARK, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums suffered a one-run defeat 5-4 at the hands of the Rockford RIverhawks in the finale of a six-game roadtrip on Tuesday night at Rockford's Road Ranger Stadium.
For the third time in the series the Beach Bums opened an early lead. With runners at first and second and two away in the top of the second inning, Takeshi Yamamoto, making his second start for the Beach Bums, singled in Jeff Vincent to give the Beach Bums the 1-0 edge. It was the first American professional hit and RBI for Yamamoto, who began the season on injured reserve and spent the past two seasons with the Kochi Fighting Dogs of the Shikoku Island League in Japan.
The Riverhawks quickly answered back and took the lead with two runs off of Beach Bums starter Buddy Klovstad in the bottom of the inning. A double by Jason James scored Will Henderson who led off the inning with a single. James scored following a pair of groundouts and Rockford led 2-1.
Traverse City opened a 3-2 lead with two runs in the fifth off of Rockford starter Shaun Parker. Takeshi Yamamoto picked up his second hit of the game with one out. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Brad Vericker lifted a sacrifice fly to score Yamamoto and tie the game. Rockford manager J.D. Arndt was ejected following the play as he argued a call at third where Justin Holmes slid in. The Beach Bums then executed a delayed steal as Justin Holmes broke for the plate when Jeff Brown stole second and he scored to give the Beach Bums a 3-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the inning Rockford chased Buddy Klovstad from the game. Klovstad retired the first two hitters before an error, a walk, and three straight singles saw three runs come across as Rockford opened a 5-3 lead.
The Beach Bums pulled a run closer with a run in the sixth. JT Thomas doubled to lead off the inning and he scored on Takeshi Yamamoto's second RBI single of the game. In the ninth inning against Rockford closer Mike Marksbury with two away Brad Vericker hit what appeared to be the tying homer, but Jason James reached over the right field fence and made the catch to end the game.
The Beach Bums will return home tomorrow night for their first out of division matchup. The Gateway Grizzlies, owners of the best record in the Frontier League, make their only visit of the season as a three-game series opens at 7:05 pm. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Beach Bums decal. Gates open at 5:05 pm and fans are encouraged to arrive early.
Traverse City will send RHP Tony Casoli (1-2, 8.55) to the hill in the opener of a six-game homestand while Gateway counters with RHP Nate Roush (2-1, 3.60). The game can be heard live on the Fox FM with Tim Calderwood on the call beginning with the Beach Bums On Deck Show at 6:45 pm.
