Rockets Too Much For Blazers
February 2, 2014 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Kamloops Blazers News Release
The Kamloops Blazers (11-37-2-3) were overmatched in the third period playing their fourth game in five nights as the Kelowna Rockets (42-7-0-2) scored three times in the third period for a 7-3 win over the Blazers.
It was a poor start for the Blazers as 16-year-old Cole Kehler was making his third career WHL start. The first two shots the Rockets had beat Kehler Myles Bell and Tyson Baillie gave the Rockets a 2-0 lead only 3:13 into the game. The Blazers stuck with it and were outshooting the Rockets 11-3 midway through the first period. They finally got a break when 17-year-old Collin Shirley tapped home a rebound. The assists on the play were from a pair of 16-year-olds in Nick Chyzowski and Deven Sideroff. The Rockets made it 3-1 before the period was out. Ryan Olsen got a rebound from a shot off the end boards onto his stick and scored. The Rockets took the 3-1 lead into the second period.
The Blazers made a goaltending change for the second period as Bolton Pouliot entered the goal. Pouliot was beat early as Myles Bell won a race to a puck and slid home a shot to make it a 4-1 Rockets lead. The young Blazers just continued to stay with it though and gained some momentum as the period carried on. Jake Kryski had another great chance to get his first WHL goal, but Jordon Cooke denied him in tight. Shirley tallied his second goal of the night set up nicely by Josh Connolly and Deven Sideroff to make it 4-2. The Blazers then got a goal from 17-year-old defenseman Austin Douglas who wired a point shot past goaltender Jordon Cooke as the Blazers trailed 4-3 headed into the third period.
The Rockets made quick work of the Blazers in the third period as Myles Bell scored two more goals and Rourke Chartier added a goal as the Rockets won 7-3 over the Blazers.
The Blazers had another great effort from their young players as 16-year-old call-up Deven Sideroff finished with two assists and 15-year-old Jake Kryski was outstanding for the second straight night.
Cole Kehler started the game stopping 9 of 12 shots in the first period. Bolton Pouliot finished the game turning aside 23 of 27 shots he faced.
Everything 20-year-old forward Myles Bell shot turned to gold tonight as he had a career night scoring four times and picking up two assists for six points.
The Blazers will get a day of rest tomorrow before getting ready for four home games in six days starting on Wednesday, February 5 when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings.
