Rockets Rookie Camp: Day Three
August 23, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Kelowna Rockets News Release
Today was the third full day of the Kelowna Rockets Rookie Camp.
Once again beginning at 9:00am and going until 7:10pm, the six tryout squads each played two more fast-paced, hard-hitting games. The games had combinations of 4-on-4, 3-on-3, and even some power play and penalty kill in order for the evaluators to see players in every situation.
Heading into day four on Friday morning, the rookies will have one more opportunity to show the scouts and management what they can do on the ice before rookie camp concludes midway through the day, and the Rockets begin registration for main camp. Rockets Assistant Coach Travis Crickard gave some advice to the rookies before their last skate.
"Have fun. For myself personally when I get to watch these guys, I get pretty excited. They're young, they're new faces, they're coming here trying to make an impression, and I feel like they come here with a ton of energy," said Crickard. "Obviously they come here with expectations and pressure applied to themselves, which I think is the case in any tryout camp, but I would say just go out there, enjoy it and have fun. Who knows, you might get an invite to our main camp, and if you don't, you still have an opportunity to perhaps make an impression for next year."
Rookie camp wraps up at 1:10pm on Friday.
Main Camp on-ice sessions begin Saturday, and fitness is what Crickard is seeking from his returning players heading back into Rockets Training Camp.
"I want to know who is fit, and who is not. For the guys who are not fit, what I would say to them is that they have a lot of catch up to do because this is going to be a season where we are going to have to rely on some of our youth to play big minutes right away. So if you are not fit, you better find a way to get fit within three or four weeks."
Main Camp runs from August 24th - August 30th, with Rockets preseason beginning on August 31st as they host their divisional rivals, the Victoria Royals at Prospera Place. Puck drop is at 7:05pm.
