Kelowna Rockets News Release
The Kelowna Rockets are proud to announce that Rodney Southam has been named the 21st captain in Rockets history.
Southam 19, is in his second season with the Rockets after being acquired from Tri-City in a trade early last season.
"Rodney is the heart and soul of our team," said Rockets president/GM Bruce Hamilton. "I'm happy that as an organization we've made a decision on the captaincy and I think Rodney will do a wonderful job. I believe this team needs someone in charge from a player's perspective and Rodney is well-respected by his teammates."
Southam returned to the Rockets line-up last weekend after missing 12 games to injury. The Rockets had been playing with four assistant captains since the start of the season.
Rockets head coach Brad Ralph said Southam was a perfect fit for the team captaincy.
"He possesses all the qualities of a captain," said Ralph. "He has a positive attitude and at team first mindset. He's a hard worker and he's courageous."
"It's taken a long time to figure this group out with players away (at World Junior and NHL camps) and with injuries," added Hamilton. "We're confident Rodney will be back as an over-age player as well and that made it even more appealing to us."
Southam was acquired for Tri-City near the beginning of the last season for a fifth round WHL Bantam Draft pick. He played 53 regular season games last season and 19 more, in the WHL playoffs and every game at the Memorial Cup. Overall he's played 151 career WHL games.
A native of Saskatoon, the 6-foot, 185 pound right wing has played in 35 games this year, scoring six goals and posting 13 points.
