Green Bay Rockers News Release
Battle Creek, Mich. - The Green Bay Rockers fell to the Battle Creek Battle Jacks 5-3 Sunday afternoon at MCCU Field, splitting the two-game series on the road after the Rockers won the first game of the series 10-2 Saturday night.
Despite a strong start from Kyle Stoddard (Missouri Southern State), the Battle Jacks scored three late runs to give themselves their first victory over Green Bay, as the Rockers return home to prepare for a two-game series against the Lakeshore Chinooks starting Monday at Capital Credit Union Park.
Green Bay picked up where they left off from Saturday in the top of the first inning, after an RBI double from JoJo Jackson (Georgia State) gave the Rockers an early 1-0 lead through just a half inning of play.
However, the Battle Jacks responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first on an RBI infield hit from Kyle Ratliff (SIU-Edwardsville), evening up the score at 1-1 heading into the second inning at MCCU Field.
After both teams went scoreless in the second, Jayson Jones (Arkansas) put the Rockers back on top with an RBI single up the middle, handing Green Bay a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the third.
Stoddard continued his strong start in the third with a 1-2-3 frame, while also recording his third strikeout, as this kept the Rockers up 2-1 going into the fourth inning in Battle Creek.
The Battle Jacks tied it back up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on an error, but the Rockers regained control immediately courtesy of a solo homer off the bat of Kyle West (West Virginia). His fourth homer of the season handed the Rockers the lead right back at 3-2, and it would stay that way heading into the sixth inning, following a scoreless fifth frame from Stoddard.
Following each team not scoring in the sixth, Battle Creek took their first lead of the afternoon at 4-3 following an RBI double from Charlie Rhee (San Diego State) and an RBI sacrifice fly from Cam Farrar (University of Findlay).
Cooper Dossett (Arkansas) however retired all three batters he faced in the seventh to keep the deficit at just one for Green Bay heading into the eighth inning, with the Rockers looking for a late rally against the Battle Jacks.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Battle Jacks tacked on one more run to extend their lead to 5-3 courtesy of an RBI single from Dave Alleva (West Chester University), as the Rockers looked for a ninth inning comeback down by two at MCCU Field.
Despite the Rockers putting the tying run on first in the ninth, the Rockers did not score in the frame as Battle Creek held on for the 5-3 victory over Green Bay.
The Rockers now return home to take on the Lakeshore Chinooks Monday night, in what will be a two-game series at Capital Credit Union Park to begin the week. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. with it also being Free Hot Dog Monday at the ballpark. This means hot dogs will be free for all fans for the first 90 minutes after gates open at 5:30 p.m.
