Rockers Fall At Gastonia As Home Runs Fly

GASTONIA, N.C. - The Gastonia Honey Hunters out-homered the High Point Rockers 4-2 on Sunday and came away with an 11-3 win at CaroMont Health Ballpark.

Gastonia received two homers from Josh Sale and one each from Boog Powell and Mike Papi while the Rockers' Jerry Downs and Michael Russell each hit solo homers.

Gastonia starter William Kirway went six innings and held the Rockers to five hits while walking three and striking out six. High Point starter Ricky Knapp lasted 3.1 innings and allowed seven hits and nine runs.

Gastonia took a 3-0 lead when Papi hit his eighth home run with two aboard in the bottom of the third. Later in the inning, Sale would hit a grand slam, his 12th homer to the year, to put the Honey Hunters ahead 7-0.

The Honey Hunters scored again in the fourth as Powell homered, a two-run shot, for a 9-0 lead.

The Rockers rallied with a pair of solo home runs in the top of the sixth. Russell hit his third homer of the year and Downs clubbed his fifth to cut the margin to 9-2.

But Gastonia got those runs back when Sale hit his second homer of the game, his 13th of the year, with one aboard in the seventh to push the Honey Hunters ahead 11-2.

High Point scored once in the top of the ninth when J.R. DiSarcina singled and came around to score on a Russell base hit to account for the 11-3 final.

Russell finished the day with three hits and two RBI.

The Rockers will conclude the four-game series with Gastonia on Monday at 6:50 p.m. at CaroMont Health Ballpark.
