Blue Crabs Lose Second Straight Heartbreaker

July 4, 2021 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

(Central Islip, NY) For the first time since June 13th, the Blue Crabs have lost back-to-back games. Tonight's 4-3 loss at the hands of the Long Island Ducks put Southern Maryland one half game back in the Atlantic League North Division, but the squad has the chance to regain first place in Monday's series finale.

With two of the Blue Crabs' top three batters sidelined due to injury, SOMD's Hometown Team lost a late lead for the second night in a row. It has been a hard-fought series, as the first three games of a pivotal set between the top two teams in the North Division have been decided by one run.

The Blue Crabs jumped out to an early lead in the third inning on Sunday evening when Josh McAdams singled Dario Pizzano home. Will Decker doubled in a run in the fourth, and Michael Baca did the same in the sixth, giving the Blue Crabs a healthy 3-0 lead. The Atlantic League leader in strikeouts, Mike Devine was nearly flawless through five innings, but the Ducks caught fire in the bottom of the sixth, plating a trio to tie the ballgame heading into the final third.

Hector Sanchez hit a go-ahead homer in the bottom of the eighth to give Long Island a 4-3 lead, securing the Ducks second straight win. Southern Maryland will put Brandon Barker on the mound on Monday in an attempt to split a four-game series with the Ducks.
