Barnstormers Rally Comes Up Short

July 4, 2021 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

In a week that has featured wild comebacks on both sides, the Lancaster Barnstormers tried to pull off another on Sunday evening at People's Bank Park.

They came up just short on more than one occasion.

Caleb Gindl's deep fly ball to right center was caught just ahead of the warning track by Darian Sandford, stranding the tying run at second in a 6-5 York victory.

The Barnstormers spent the bulk of the night trying to make up an early 5-0 deficit. Carlos Castro's sacrifice fly to center scored Yan Sanchez in the first. York added three more runs in the second. Jack Kenley led off with a walk, and Josue Herrera followed with a two-run homer off Yoel Espinal (1-5). J.C. Encarnacion tripled to left center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Hill as the Revolution lead grew to 4-0.

A triple by Castro to right center and Kenley's single to left provided York with its fifth run in the third inning.

Duke von Schamann (2-3) limited the Barnstormers to two hits over the first four innings, but Lancaster embarked on a comeback in the fifth. With one out, LeDarious Clark reached second on a throwing error by Yan Sanchez. Anthony Peroni followed with a double off the left field wall to produce the first and only run of that inning.

Lancaster got closer in the sixth. Caleb Gindl led off with a walk and took third on Blake Allemand's single to right. Blake Gailen produced one run with a topper to second, and a second scored when pinch hitter Kelly Dugan mashed a double off the batter's eye. Pinch runner Dominic DiSabatino scored when Clark singled down the left field line, trimming the York lead to one.

The Revolution scored a much needed insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Hill reached on a scratch single up the third base line. Two outs later, pinch hitter Andrew Dundon dropped a bloop single into shallow right. After a long battle, Castro delivered Hill with a single to right off Gabriel Moya.

Again, Lancaster countered as Peroni slapped a double down the right field line with one out in the ninth. He scored on a single up the middle by Nick Shumpert, who stole second during Gindl's at bat. Gindl worked the count to 3-2 before his deep fly out ended the game. Victor Capellan earned his second save.

The Barnstormers will send DiSabatino (3-3) to the mound on Monday evening against lefty Austin Nicely (3-2). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting at 6:25.

NOTES: Gindl lost his hitting streak at 12, but his on-base and runs scored streak were stretched to 13...Dugan has eight hits in his last 12 at bats...Lancaster played the game without Melvin Mercedes who is home in New York City for the birth of his child...Ben Wanger threw two scoreless innings... A single by James Harris ended his streak of outs at 10.
